Circumambulator, as this piece is to be titled, will be a large scale and fully portable sculpture with a public performance aspect as an important part of the total endeavor. A description of the projected public component for this new work can be distilled into three classifications. These categories are object, atmosphere, and performance.

The object itself is to be a large steel fabricated sculpture that doubles as a racetrack. The object's form will be influenced by its functionality and structural requirements. The maintenance of an aesthetic objecthood is also critical, with framework and other supporting components of the piece remaining clearly visible and even accentuated. The sculpture will be assembled from welded and bolted structural steel, with a driving surface of flattened expanded metal sheet coated with a tar sealant. It will also be modular, and able to be easily broken down into its component parts for transportation, indoor installation, and relocation to other sites. A tubular steel commercial scaffold will accompany the sculpture during the performance. This scaffolding will function as a driver's stand, from which the racecars are to be controlled. The driver's stand scaffolding will be removed from the site during times of inactivity for safety reasons, as well as to heighten the visual presence of the track object. During evening hours, the sculpture should remain lit for the same reasons.

The atmosphere of the work is to be developed using some of the same techniques employed by professional race organizations, but on a smaller scale. A brand identity for Circumambulator will be created and used to produce promotional fliers, t-shirts, and banners. Art posters will also be produced using a hand silkscreen process, and a high quality printed catalog will be available for purchase at the venue. Copies of the catalog will also be donated to local museums and libraries. Hobby manufacturers and distributors have volunteered to donate large banners that display their products and logos to lend to the race atmosphere of the event. The temporary scaffolding on the site will double as a support structure for banners.

The performance of Circumambulator is equal to the object in its artistic importance, and will enter different stages as it progresses. The public will be able to watch all stages of the performance free of charge, with the exception of possible institutional fund raising events. The initial stages of the performance will proceed much like a typical art opening with the public looking at the objects as they are installed. The first performance will begin with a conceptually structured race between cars detailed with gold leaf and suspension and motor settings configured perfectly for optimal speed and handling on the sculpture's track surface. The second part of the performance will involve public interaction with the sculpture. Less efficient cars used previously in Flash Crash will be provided on a limited basis for members of the audience who want to attempt to negotiate the track themselves. Any members of the audience with their own equipment will also be allowed to attempt to use it on the track. A fee may be charged for track time and car rental. During evening hours of the same day a series of night races will be performed during the gallery opening. During the opening the track will be closed to public racers. Volunteers will assist in the recovery of crashed cars, and other support duties.
